The FIRB MTIT project, coordinated by Fondazione Politecnico Milano, had the aim to study in-depth the electrospinning process, that create a nanometric filament of polymeric fiber. The fiber is produced starting from a solution of material spun by a needle in an electrostatic field. The jet starts from a needle and its diameter is reduced thanks to the instability of the process that stretch the fiber till nanometric dimension. The project studied both the material properties than the possible application in different areas.
The contribution of MTRL has been the FE modeling of the process, inclusing the electrical field, the construction of a demo tester and the evaluation of the effect of the process parameters on the process deposition rate and filament charactertistics (e.g. diameter, spatial distribution).
