The occurrence of instability in the milling process, usually called “chatter”, is one of the main constraint to a further improvement of machining removal rate for the actual machine tools. The research activities of MTRL are focused on both the analytical and experimental study about the modeling and the suppression of chatter. Some current activities are: development of an active workpiece holder to mitigate the occurrence of chatter, modeling of plunging processes, development of indices to evaluate the occurrence of chatter, etc.
